Personally, I don’t. I’m a woman myself and while I believe that overall both genders are 100% equal, I also know that doesn’t mean we’re equal in all areas. I was talking to a male friend about this the other day, he being an advocate for male-only admissions, and me having been an advocate for allowing phsyically qualifying females, as in, the ones who are as tall and big as the guys, and he simply replied “show me one big & tall female in here who could carry me if I was wounded” and I kind of, er, got his point. Even when born bigger than average, women still don’t have the excess muscle mass and bone density that guys do. So while there may be the rare extreme bodybuilder female to come along and meet standards, I don’t think that’s enough to allow any averagely fit female to join as they do. In addition to that, the numbers are out that more than 25% of females in the military have been sexually assaulted by the men they’re working with, and that just can’t fly. But you’re putting recruited men in a pack with a woman or two, shipping them away from all their sense of normality, and placing them in a state of hyper intense violence. If not risk from our own male team members, we’re fighting in the middle east right now and likely will be for a while, where women are considered playthings and property. I think it’s just a bad scenario all around, putting the women and men in danger. What are your thoughts on this subject?

if they want to and meat the same requirements as the males then yes
If they can do the job, I see no reason to keep them out. I don’t think many could do it, but I’m sure there are a few who could. And by this, I mean they have to meet the same requirements as men, not any of this lesser requirement garbage. I’m a pretty out-of-shape guy and I once discovered even I could almost hit the mark on situps for the women’s standards in the army and probably not far off from the chinup standards. I couldn’t come close to the running time as I can’t run very far to save my life. If I can come close to doing it, the standards are too low.
Note I am discussing actual combat, not just simply women in the military. I don’t think most people would argue against women in non-combat roles. I don’t have a problem with women in combat, but they need to be able to do the job and not just put there for some stupid affirmative action reasons.
If a woman wants to serve her country, then let then her. I think they are mature enough to know the possible consequences.
If they can cut it like the men, then yes. If they can’t – and this includes 90% of women – then no. Nobody wants to see women getting blown to bits screaming in agony on the battlefield or being captured and raped.
If they want to and can fit the physical requirements, yes. It shouldn’t be about gender. . it should be about able bodies doing the work. . . there are a LOT of men who couldn’t carry your friend if he were injured either. As for 25% of females being sexually assaulted by the men they’re working with, that just reflects negatively on these men who are supposed to be super noble individuals protecting their country and yet they can’t control their hormones long enough to not violate a woman who’s working to do the same job as them.
“Nobody wants to see women getting blown to bits screaming in agony on the battlefield or being captured and raped. ”
^^And people do want to see men getting blown to bits screaming in agony on the battlefield or being captured? (and possibly raped as well although obviously just being held in captivity without rape is more probable for males).
Yes, equal is equal if men can die for their country I think women should as well.
YES!
Forget biological differences, most men these days are too out of shape to be much good in the military either!
Anyway, yes I think women should be allowed to join. There ought to be qualifying standards, and that’s that, regardless of gender. Besides, even if one woman couldn’t carry your friend off, guess what. . . two of them could. Also, unless your friend is unusually tall, muscular, or fat, a woman who has gone through basic training should be able to carry him for at least enough distance to take him out of the immediate danger. Contrary to popular opinion, the majority of being a soldier is not saving your wounded buddy or getting into close-range fights.
I’ve taken earthquake emergency training, btw, and seen two short older women carry a 250 pound guy by knowing how to lift him effectively, and shift heavy debris by knowing how to use leverage, and all that kind of stuff.
In addition men get quite a few benefits from going to war (college tuition, citizenship, etc), and it’s pretty crappy to deny women those benefits because they happen to have two X chromosones. They may not be as strong as us on average, but that doesn’t make them useless.
Women should never be in the military! Women are physically smaller and weaker than men, and could not carry a fallen compatriot!! This is biological and not cultural!! Also, male soldiers have a tendency to rape their female compatriots, and that is unacceptable!!
Although there is equality between the genders, only men should be involved in fighting for their country, and women should support them from home, Señorita!!
Well that’s nice and cute, but the thing is the pinnacle of Democracy is that every member gets a say in the decisions in exchange for being willing to risk his life to defend the tribe, according to whatever the tribe decides.
If you don’t want to be in the army, that’s fine and good, but that means you aren’t entitled to the same privileges that men receive in exchange for being willing to risk our lives–such as the vote, or financial aid for college.
in non combat roles I think so but in combat roles I am not sure. If women are allowed in combat roles then I think there are no longer any reasons for not making them part of a draft as well
What does being big matter in a submarine (where small people actually work out better), or behind a desk, or repairing (or flying) aircraft? There are MANY jobs in the military, few of which involve carrying a fellow soldier. Does this mean we can’t have the really big guys in because no one could carry them? Does every guy in every unit have to be able to carry every other guy in every unit? I don’t think so.
And really, most people know how to put together a travois and even I could carry a heavy person like that.
Soldiers who assault other soldiers (or who assault civilians) should not be a part of our military forces.
Just because you wouldn’t be able to cut it doesn’t mean that every other woman should be denied the opportunity. You don’t have to be a “big & tall female” to do every kind of work there is in the military.
If the standard for joining is set at whether a person can pick up another 200 pound soldier, sailor, airmen, or marine, then you are also going to disqualify a significant percentage of current service-MEN, not just service-women. I was much stronger than quite a few of the small guys I worked with.
And your statistic on sexual assault & harassment in the military is ludicrous: Polls of civilian workers indicated that 30-35% of women have been sexually harassed in the workplace, as well as 7-17% of men. So according to your statistics, women are actually LESS LIKELY to be harassed in the military than in the civilian workplace. There are strict rules and support structures in place to prevent it from happening, protect and support those who do become victims, and punish those few who commit the crimes.
As for putting men and women in danger, guess what? If you’re in the military, that’s WHAT YOU DO. You go into harms way because your country requires it of you.
I am a woman, and I served for 6 years in both OIF and OEF. I performed my job admirably (even making E-6 in 5 years), as did most of the women and men I was deployed with. I pulled my own weight, and never once used the “. . . but I’m a girl” card.
In my 6 years, I only once had a girl who worked for me try to use that, and I made her pull her own weight as well. I had more guys lying about some pain or condition to try to get out of heavy lifting than any women ever did.
You are entitled to your opinion.

no, i don’t. they are held to a lower standard in training but their ability to do their job in the field is just as important as a mans. medical, office work, etc. . . that’s fine, but women are NOT built to go to war with the men. i know of many many occasions where a womans lack of ability has messed up the company and put them in danger. . . . it’s a joke that these feminists think women should have equal rights in this aspect. that’s like being mad men aren’t maternal. women are NOT mean to go to war, men aren’t meant to be maternal.
