for men. . . upper body is 1/3 total body weight and lower is 1/2 body weight. . . and for women its 1/4 for upper and 1/3 total body weight. . . this is a safe starting point. . . if it is too easy increase the weight
There is no formula. I suggest you go to menshealth. com and check out some of their workouts first. They also have alot of good advice on how to eat and stretch. Protein is also supperimportant. Eat lots of lean protein.
When you do lift, you have to find your own comfort zone. Then you should up it bit. It should be difficult but not overstrain your body. By the end of my first week, I could barely move my muscles and I was in alot of pain. I had a great gain, but it took a while for my muscles to recover. I lifted to much too quickly. By the end your first week, you should be sore if you did it right, but not in pain.
